What is AI?
Artificial intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. That is the dictionary definition, which I think makes it pretty clear.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a chatbot that uses artificial intelligence to engage in human-like conversations with users. Unlike previous iterations of similar tools, ChatGPT has been heavily finetuned and adjusted to a level far above regular chit-chat. The tool is capable of writing an entire essay, article or speech in the exact tone of your choice, complete with jokes and more. By the way, I’ve chosen not to use ChatGPT to write this article. If interested, you can likely find hundreds of online articles that have done exactly that.
What else is out there?
Aside from similar chatbot tools from Google and Microsoft etc, there are plenty of AI-related tools out there. There are AI tools generating amazing works of art or music from simple prompts, translating and dubbing entire videos in a matter of moments, and so much more. You may have already heard about “Deepfakes” which are using AI to generate a person’s likeness and place it onto another person's face/ body.
Who's benefitting? What are the concerns?
There’s a boom of people using Chat GPT and other tools to help them in their everyday jobs and life. It’s a great springboarding tool to help writers or artists make a start on their next story or piece, it's helping people write and fix code, solve problems, and most commonly get a quick laugh from the everyday person.
So what is it that’s scaring some people? Aside from those that have seen The Terminator too many times, the answer can be found in the definition we provided at the start: “perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence.” A concern from some is “If a computer can do what a human can do, what’s stopping it from taking my job?” Additionally, there are valid concerns about authenticity and what can be trusted anymore. School and university projects being completed by AI are genuine issues reported by some professionals. AI art has also won competitions, and of course, the issue of “deep fake” technology leads some to question the classic phrase “seeing is believing”.
What’s next?
